To help the veterinary profession better understand its role and responsibilities with respect to Oregon's OSHA requirements, the OVMA developed a comprehensive, user-friendly manual and DVD called An Ounce of Prevention as an educational tool for practices. These tools are free to members.
The Manual UPDATED 8.07
The manual is a guide for the veterinary practice’s safety and health program. It is divided into sections that cover the essential areas of safety and health standards. It includes OR-OSHA’s principle requirements, as well as a variety of checklists and forms to assist you in developing a comprehensive program.
As of August 2007, the manual has been completely reviewed and updated. It now includes new information on personal protective equipment, occupational noise exposure, blood-borne pathogens, occupational risks for pregnant workers, workplace violence and safety, and revised and updated checklists.
The manual is available in Adobe Reader Portable Document format (PDF) below. You will need to have Adobe Reader installed on your computer to view and print the manual. Members may print and/or photocopy the manual as needed for use in their practices.

The DVD
The DVD has two 16 minute modules. We recommend that veterinary practice owners watch both modules and review the manual. Although the video footage depicts a companion animal setting, the information covers regulations that are equally pertinent to equine and large animal practices. Please Contact OVMA to request your copy of the DVD.
- Module 1 helps the veterinary practice owner identify hazards in the workplace and highlights the employer’s responsibilities in meeting OR-OSHA regulations.
- Module 2 addresses the rights of employees under provisions of OR-OSHA standards, and presents staff with an overview of practice hazards as well as preventive and protective measures. The DVD can be cued to Module 2 for viewing by employees as part of their training program.
Note: The manual addresses more OSHA regulations than the DVD. You should not rely upon the DVD alone to implement your practice's safety and health program.
